Abidjan, 04 October 2022 – On the initiative of the Executive Secretariat of the Côte d’Ivoire National Borders Commission (CNFCI), Commissioner General Diakalidia Konaté presented the challenges facing the biennial Abidjan Border Forum, scheduled to take place from 18 to 20 October 2022 in Abidjan-Plateau. The forum will be attended by 3,000 participants. This was on Tuesday 04 October 2022, at Abidjan Cocody-Angré, during a press lunch marking the official launch of communication on the event.
He therefore invited the media to be true relays of this event, which will make Abidjan the border capital of the world, by getting more involved in the popularisation of border governance issues.
« To achieve integrated governance of border areas, all the players in the border governance ecosystem, in particular national and international players, organisations and technical and financial partners, are called upon to create a genuine framework for scientific and practical exchanges, to take a global approach to border issues », explained Diakalidia Konaté.
Borders,’ continued the Commissioner General, ’are now at the heart of security and development concerns, and therefore at the heart of the future of States. This is because borders have become areas of high crime due to the resurgence of terrorism and violent extremism in the sub-region, the development of smuggling, trafficking in human beings, illegal gold panning, irregular migration and so on.
‘States today must define their future solely on the basis of their borders, which are areas in which there is a great deal of interaction between populations, states, etc., in order to meet the challenges of integration, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the large common market following the example of the EU’, he said.
Ousmane Zina, Chairman of the Scientific Committee of this major multicultural cross-border event, announced that eminent scientists, practitioners and researchers from Africa and Europe would be on hand to contribute their expertise at conferences and panels.
« There is a need to rethink borders and improve border policies to make border areas places of life and peace», he said.
In addition to conferences, exhibitions, stands, panels, B-to-B meetings and presentations, there will also be eight awards on the central theme of ‘Borders and Collective Security’ from 18 to 20 October 2022.
